In the fall of 1998, I first heard about Memory Walk, a fund-raising event sponsored by the Alzheimer's Association. Memory Walk takes place in many cities all over the United States, and raises money to support local chapters in education and awareness efforts and for research funding.
Though I heard about the walk only a day or two before it was to take place, with the help of a couple of dear friends (thanks Vivian and Lisa!), we managed to bring in a respectable amount and thus, Lyle's Team was born! There was only me, my little girl Torre, my friend Lisa, and her baby, Lucas ~ who, by the way, my Dad loved! The very first Lyle's Team managed to bring home the top prize that year, a plaque for my mother to display.
The following year, another sister expressed a desire to get involved, so we again looked forward to being a part of the local walk. To our dismay, there was to be no walk in our local area. Disappointed, we checked and found a walk in a nearby town, again just days before the event.
We once again made the effort, and again we brought in enough to win the top prize, a gold plated sneaker statue for Mom's shelf.
Last year we had time to gear up and get the whole family involved ~ it was an extra special walk with all of us there ~ we were so proud when we again brought in the top prize! Most importantly though, we all got that wonderful feeling of actually "doing something" to help ~ a feeling that all of us know is hard to come by when you are dealing with this awful disease.
Well, it's that time again, and Lyle's Team is gearing up to try to do as much as possible. If you would like to be a part of Lyle's Team, please email me ~ we would love to have you! Or, if you would like to make a donation, please send it to the address below. Your check or money order should be made out to the Alzheimer's Association. Thank you in advance if you decide to help! God bless you and yours! |
